Employers Sick Of Absenteeism Have Found A Cure

Nurses using a sophisticated data recording system are at the forefront of a new approach to reducing absence levels and improving the health of employees. Companies using this innovative service have achieved absence reductions of 30%.

The initiative comes from Active Health Partners and offers a 24 hour Nurse Contact Centre for employees to call for medical advice and report their absence. It means instead of telephoning a line manager when unable to attend work, an employee will contact the Nurse Contact Centre where qualified nurses offer provide primary health advice and support from 'Day 1'. The nurses provide an estimated return to work date and inform line managers immediately of the absence by email and mobile text message.

The process

Integral to the service is the sophisticated data capture system which provides real-time reports via the web to managers and HR professionals, which allows them to spend less time collecting absence information and more time addressing absenteeism.

Implementing a policy of early medical intervention deters those not genuinely ill and gives opportunity to advise sick employees about recovery and return to work. AHP's service will effectively reduce the cost and duration of the absence, as well as enabling consistency in management of absence across the organization, and providing quality information to identify trends and areas of concern.

Increasingly, ill health and absence is on the radar screen of senior management and more proactive measures need to be taken to deliver significant health improvements and cost savings.
"Many employers in the private and public sectors are taking serious steps to reduce absence levels, but their internal resources are not always effective in identifying the true drivers of absence," comments Ingolv Urnes, Chief Executive at AHP.

"Our service provides a genuine employee benefit and delivers the quality management information necessary to enable better visibility of absence trends and a greater understanding of the true drivers of absence."

Note to Editors

AHP's nurses offer health advice 24/7 to over 50,000 employees in the UK and record their absences.

AHP further provides the recording of accidents at work and case management of complex cases (e.g. injury at work or frequent absence).
