Developing the business case: Local Government

Over the past years AHP has worked with over a number of clients in Local Government to better understand the cost of absence and develop a comprehensive Business Case. "We start with the strategic objectives of an organisation and try to understand how employee absence fits into the overall direction," says Richard Chandler, Head of Local Government at AHP. "Based on our success in reducing absence and generating savings, we have developed a comprehensive model so that organisations can get an understanding of what is really possible," adds Chandler.

Developing the 'hard' numbers for a Business Case is critical in terms of getting buy-in from senior management and finance. The Business Case clearly relies on a number of input factors such as current days lost and the mix of short vs. long-term absence. "But maybe less obvious are the large indirect costs associated with absence and interruption to the organisation and the impact on our client's service delivery. These less visible costs can often be more than 100% of the direct sickness absence costs," says Chandler.
